Beginning in the Victorian era, shawls became an essential accessory in a lady's wardrobe. Principally imported from the Far East and comprised of various fine textiles, shawls were also produced in France, England and Scotland. Shawls also served the practical purpose of protecting pianos from nicks and scratches. Thus, elaborately designed, colorful scarves doubled as eye-catching piano-top decor as well.
