Opened by the Midland Railway in 1868, St. Pancras Station was designed to be a spectacular crossroads station at the heart of London. Bricks, tiles, and stone were assembled to support a massive glass-and-steel train shed, forming (at the time) the largest enclosed space in the world. It was a majestic structure that impressed travelers and marked London as one of the major cultural centers of the world.
