Pocket-watches were touted by gentlemen and ladies. Originally watch keys dangled alongside in order to set the time. Then, in 1842 Adrien Philippe created stem-set pocket watches like the one you see here today.
This style was showcased at London's Great Exhibition in 1851. It is recorded that Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert were the first to own stem-set watches.
